from burnout to bank: why your fashion biz isn't making money yet

From burnout to bank: why your fashion biz isn’t making money (yet)

I remember sitting in my car outside Joann’s, staring at a cart full of fabric and wondering how the heck I was going to cover it all. I was running sales, fulfilling custom orders, sewing until 2am. I’d answer DMs between pickups and post reels during naptime. I did everything I was “supposed” to do.

But despite the hustle, my bank account always felt one skipped payment away from disaster.

Sound familiar?

I used to think I had a visibility problem. Or a pricing problem. Or maybe a social media problem. So I doubled down. I stayed up later. I posted more. I said yes to every order—even when I was already stretched thin. I kept chasing. And chasing. And chasing.

But deep down, I knew something wasn’t working. I didn’t just feel tired—I felt trapped. Trapped in a business that looked cute on the outside but didn’t actually work.

Here’s what I had to learn (the hard way):

You don’t have an income problem. You have a system problem.

If you’re a fashion designer trying to make your business work online, and you’re not seeing consistent income, I want to walk you through why that is—and what’s really keeping your business from scaling.

1. You’re relying on effort, not assets.

The harsh truth? You can only sew so fast. You can only ship so many orders. There are only so many hours in a day—and if your income depends on those hours, you’ll always hit a ceiling.

What I didn’t understand at first was that real growth comes from assets: offers, systems, and structures that keep working, even when you’re offline, on vacation, or completely burnt out.

Until you build that in? You’re the engine. You stop, everything stops.

You need to stop being the bottleneck in your business.

2. You’re selling to the wrong level of client.

If you’ve ever had someone ask, “Do you have a coupon code?” five minutes after discovering your brand, you already know how exhausting it is to cater to bargain shoppers.

Or… and this is my favorite.. Someone you know personally finds out that you sew and wants you to make them something (for less than cost and labor) because it “should” be cheaper if you’re sewing it yourself. Right? Wedding dresses should only be $200 tops… since you’re sewing it for free. Because you’re a fashion designer. You can do that for them.

Oh man, if I had a nickel for every person that asked me to do their mending or sewing for $5 an hour… I would have a yacht by now.

The truth is, not everyone is your customer. And trying to please everyone will bleed you dry—financially, creatively, and emotionally.

When I finally shifted my energy toward the clients who valued the experience, not just the price tag, everything changed. Fewer transactions, bigger payments, way more joy.

3. You haven’t built a funnel that does the work.

It’s one thing to have a gorgeous brand. It’s another to have a brand that converts.

If you’re manually answering questions, sending links, and crossing your fingers that people remember to come back and buy, you’re not running a business—you’re hosting a very tiring pop-up shop.

A funnel changes all that. It takes someone from curious to confident—without you having to walk them through it step by step, every time.

It has systems that attract your ideal audience, nurtures them and sells them into your offers and products. And then they come back for more. You have a system that builds repeat customers and doesn’t just grow your brand, it grows your legacy.

4. Your mindset is still in DIY mode.

It’s hard to admit, but for a long time, I wore my struggle like a badge of honor.

I thought the late nights meant I was “working hard.” I thought the overwhelm meant I was “earning it.” And I thought that if I just kept pushing, one day it would finally pay off.

But the breakthrough didn’t come from pushing harder. It came from thinking differently.

Until you start making decisions from the version of you who already has the business you want—not the one stuck surviving—it’s going to feel like a grind.

I had to make a mindset shift, but once I did… everything started to change.

5. You’re not consistently showing up where it counts.

You don’t have to be on every platform, create content every day, or chase every trend.

And for the love of everything holy, you don’t need to learn viral Tiktok dance trends and post them. I can whip and nay-nay… but you won’t find a video of me on the internet doing that.

Sound like a plan?

But you do have to show up with intention. You have to get clear on where your people are—and make it easy for them to trust you, buy from you, and stick around.

You can stop stretching yourself thin. You just need a smarter way to show up.

If any of this hit home, you’re not broken. You’re not lazy. And you’re definitely not alone.

I see you. I was you. And I want to show you the path that helped me finally break free from the burnout cycle and build a business that runs with me, not because of me.

Inside my brand-new free masterclass, I walk you through exactly how I went from feast-or-famine orders to consistent, aligned income. It’s real, it’s honest, and it’s designed for fashion designers who are ready for more.

I forgot to take my seasonal allergy meds that day, so forgive my voice. But you can watch it on-demand, in your jammies.
