fashion designer making money while off-grid

The $2K I Made in 24 Hours While Camping (and How You Can Too)

We were deep in the woods. I had no cell service, no Wi-Fi, and honestly, no expectations.

Before heading out on a family camping trip, I scheduled a flash sale. Nothing fancy. Just a quick promo for a digital pattern bundle I had already created. I batched the emails, designed the posts, and uploaded everything into my scheduler. Then I shut my laptop and went to toast marshmallows with my kids, and meet up with our friends.

Two days later, I charged my phone and drove into town, and my phone started pinging from all the notifications I missed. I hadn’t been online for almost a full 3 days.

And that’s when I saw it:
PayPal notifications. Dozens of them.

Over $2,000 in just the first 24 hours—while I was completely offline. But more sales came in on the other days too.

That one sale covered rent and groceries for the month.

And here’s the kicker: it didn’t happen because I got lucky.
It happened because I finally started treating my business like a business—even when I wasn’t working.

Let’s talk about why it worked.
And more importantly, why this kind of simplicity-first strategy is a game-changer for fashion designers.

What Actually Made This Work?

A lot of people assume you need a huge following or months of prep to make a launch like this successful.
I didn’t have either. I wasn’t “everywhere.” I wasn’t showing up live. I wasn’t DMing everyone I knew.

What I did have was a system:

  • A digital product that solved a real need
  • A warm, aligned audience
  • A clear, timely offer
  • Content and emails planned ahead
  • Boundaries with my time and energy

This wasn’t about grinding.
It was about stacking small actions ahead of time, so that I could step away and let the system do its job.

1. I Chose a Product That Was Easy to Say Yes To

I didn’t try to reinvent the wheel or create a massive new course from scratch.

I bundled up a few of my most loved patterns into a curated collection and added a small discount for 48 hours only. That’s it.

It was something my audience had been asking for already — and that made it a no-brainer.

The truth is:
You don’t have to be wildly creative to be successful.
You have to be clear.

The best-selling offers aren’t always brand-new.
They’re often the ones that give people a shortcut to something they already want.

👉 This is one of the biggest shifts I teach in my training. Most designers are making things harder than they need to be.

2. I Wrote Emails That Sounded Like Me

I didn’t try to be persuasive. I didn’t follow a complicated formula.
I just wrote from the heart.

This was even before AI existed, so they were raw, messy and probably had a typo or two in them.

You don’t have to be a world-class copywriter to pull this off. (I’ve worked with one, and my messy from-the-heart copy still wins out.)

Anyways….

Each email had one job:

  • One email announced the sale
  • One shared why I made the bundle and what others had said about it
  • One gave a final heads-up before the cart closed

I didn’t try to convince people.
I just told the truth and gave them a reason to act now.

I see so many designers paralyze themselves trying to write “perfect” copy.
But your audience doesn’t want perfection.

They want connection.

They want you and your story.

3. I Followed the Rule of 3 Posts Per Day

This isn’t about “posting more.”

It’s about being visible enough that your audience doesn’t miss your offer.

I kept it simple:

  • A post in the morning
  • A story or reminder midday
  • A final CTA in the evening

I reused the same visuals and rotated captions. No overthinking.

The result?
People noticed. They engaged.
And eventually, they bought.

Here’s the kicker: Most of your audience isn’t ignoring you—they’re just busy.
Your job isn’t to shout louder.
It’s to show up consistently until they’re ready to listen.

And this was before Stories or Threads was a thing. Tiktok? Yeah, that didn’t exist the way it does now.

You don’t need to “go viral” for this to work.

4. I Scheduled Everything Before I Left

This might be the most important piece.

I didn’t wing it.

I treated this flash sale like a real launch — even though it was short and sweet.

Everything was ready to go before I even packed my bags:

  • Emails scheduled
  • Social content batched
  • Graphics designed in Canva
  • Countdown timers in place
  • Checkout pages tested

And then I walked away.

That’s the beauty of digital business done right.
When you do the work ahead of time, your systems sell for you.

We work smarter, not harder.

Why This Matters for Designers With Small Audiences

Let’s bust a few myths right now.

If you’re waiting until you have:

  • A polished brand
  • A big audience
  • Or a viral moment…

You’ll be waiting forever.

The truth?
You don’t need any of that.

What you need is:

  • A clear offer
  • A reason for someone to buy now
  • A simple strategy that respects your time

That’s it.

Some of my most profitable launches happened during:

  • Family vacations
  • Holiday baking
  • The week I buried a loved one

Because I let go of perfect and focused on done.

My favorite time, was taking my kids to Disneyland and Universal Studios and the sales were literally pinging on my phone while I was stuffing my face with churros and riding the Pirates of the Caribbean ride, and on the Studio Tour.

I don’t have a crazy huge audience on social media, and I’m pretty sure I’ve never gone viral. Which is fine. I’m happy being your little secret weapon when you’re ready to grow your fashion business online.

Here’s the Real Secret…

I didn’t make $2K in one day because I worked harder.
I made $2K in one day because I stopped relying on hustle, and started relying on strategy.

I built something sustainable.

And now I rinse and repeat.

You can do this too.

Not because I’m some unicorn… but because I’ve learned how to simplify.

The Tools I Used (Spoiler: Nothing Fancy)

I know you’ll ask, so here’s a peek at the tech stack:

  • Flodesk for email
  • Canva for visuals
  • Meta Business Suite for scheduling
  • Woocommerce to run my business and host my shop

Most of these tools are free or under $30/month.

But here’s the thing:
The tools didn’t make the money.
The system did.

Tools are just containers.
It’s what you put inside that matters.

What You Should Be Thinking About Right Now

If you’re still with me, let’s pause.

Right now, you might be thinking:

  • “But my audience is tiny.”
  • “I don’t know what to sell.”
  • “I’ve tried before and nothing worked.”
  • “I don’t have time to plan like this.”

And I get it.
I’ve thought all those things, too.

But here’s the shift:
You’re not behind. You’re just ready to try something new.

If you’re even considering launching something…
Your next step isn’t to figure it all out on your own.

It’s to learn from someone who’s done it successfully—and repeat what works.

Psst… I saved all those emails. And the sequence that I sent them. I give those away to my clients to repurpose for their own business. Just saying.

Final Thoughts: Simplicity Sells

This isn’t about hustling harder.
It’s about working smarter.

You don’t need to do more.
You need to do what works—and let go of the rest.

My highest-earning days have one thing in common:
They were simple.

They didn’t require reels, launches, or long to-do lists.
They required clarity, consistency, and a plan.

That’s what I want for you, too.

If you’re ready to stop spinning your wheels and finally build a fashion business that supports your life—not consumes it—I’ll walk you through exactly how to do it in my free training.
