Continuing our Bump & Baby series, today we’re making Baby Moccasins! This isn’t my pattern but they are just too cute to pass up. And everyone loves a good pair of baby shoes, am I right? 🙂 So grab the pattern, find some leather and let’s get to sewing!
I used a sheet of leather from the crafts store. It’s in the leather craft section, with all the embossing, and burning tools. Just ask if you need help finding it. It comes in little sheets, and you don’t need much for these. I used one sheet to make a 0-3 month size! You can also make these in pleather or vinyl, pretty much something that doesn’t fray.
Now these are totally adorable, but threading the elastic through a tiny leather channel has brought new meaning to the word TEDIOUS. I couldn’t figure out if I was even making progress, the leather was so thick and I could barely feel the safety pin in there. Hah, forget using a bodkin, those don’t fit in this. If anyone has an easier idea how to thread elastic in a narrow space, please share!
And I like the look of the fringe going all the way around so I changed the toe loop to accommodate that.
Here’s how I did it.
Just lengthen the front loop by 1″ or 2″ and sew across the toe loop guideline. After the front and back sides are sewn onto the sole you can shorten that front loop to match the sides. I then cut straight down the middle of it to make two fringes, and had the side fringe match the width of those cuts.
Taa-dah! Wee little booties that are cute for any boy or girl. Such a fun gift to whip up!
The pattern goes up to sizes 3/4T…challenge accepted! I have two other kids that will fit this pattern too, just need to get more leather to fit them. 🙂
Happy Sewing! I would love to see your little moccasins if you make some.
